Sony admits to display issue on Xperia S

03 April 2012

Limited problem will be sorted at 'no cost'

Rumours of a problem with the screen on the Sony Xperia S have been just that for some time. Until now that is, with the tech giant coming clean on an issue affecting a 'limited number' of handsets.

That issue, on a handset rated highly in review by us, is yellow screen. I know, sounds painful. In fact, it is painful to look at if you have the problem, as your phone screen gets an annoying yellow tint when it gets too warm.

That has now been acknowledged in a statement from Sony, which told CNET UK: 'Sony Mobile Communications has identified that the display on a limited number of Xperia S smartphones may show a slight yellow tint if exposed to temperatires above 40 degrees Celsius.' That's down to a manufacturing flaw in a 'small number of units', with the process causing it now dealt with. So in theory, it shouldn't rear its ugly yellow head again.

That's little consolation for anyone with the problem though. Sony advises any purchasers with the problem to get in touch with their local customer service centre: 'Sony Mobile Communications will resolve this at no cost to the consumer.'

Shame really, because, as we said, the phone rated highly in review and is a real contender when it comes to Android phones. Still, at least the problem is now sorted, rather than being swept under the carpet – and you can buy one with some peace of mind.
