APP WATCH: Sky Go coming to more Android handsets

01 May 2012

Galaxy Note and Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones next in line

If you are a Sky viewer and an iPhone owner, you will almost certainly rate Sky Go as a 'must-have' app. The problem for Sky customers with Android phones is that compatibility for the app is a little hit and miss. Hopefully, that will be less of a problem in the next few weeks.

The initial rollout for Sky Go for Android was compatible for the HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible S, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy S II. But according to a Sky source speaking to TechRadar, more Samsung phones and a range of Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones will be added to the list soon.

'Sky has begun testing the app for the Galaxy Nexus and are hopeful it will be out for the Nexus and ICS-enabled handsets (Including the Galaxy Note) in the next couple of weeks,' the 'source' commented.

The lack of a universal rollout isn't ideal, but apparently there is some reasoning behind this. Sky can't port Sky Go on to a handset that has HDMI out as it would breach its broadcasting contract for a start. On top of that, there are also issues with varying screen resolutions and media players, which are making life hard for the app developers.

Over time, we would hope much of that is ironed out, so all Android owners can feel the Sky love. But right now, be thankful that things are moving forward - and more customers will be good to go in the very near future.
